Social Security Number (SSN)
A Social Security number (SSN) is a unique 9 digit number that is given by the federal Social Security Administration. Your parents or guardian will likely have your SSN card with the number.
You will use your SSN throughout your life.
Keep it in a safe place with other important documents, like your birth certificate or diploma. It is alright to give your number to an employer or when you apply for government services.
What if I don’t have a Social Security number?
If you have never had a SSN, you must submit an application to the Social Security Administration. Individuals 12 years old and over will be interviewed in person. If your SSN is lost, you can ask for a replacement card. You will need these documents for a new or replacement card:
- U.S. birth certificate or U.S. passport
- State Driver’s license, State identification card, or school photo ID
Other documents may be accepted. The application for a SSN is free.

- pay a fee.

What if I wasn’t born in Maryland?
If you were born in a state other than Maryland, contact the vital records office in the state where you were born for instructions on how to request a copy and information on any fees. The National Center for Health Statistics provides contact information for getting vital records for every state.
